My name's Jon. I'm an illustration student at Wash U. This is my sketch blog. Comments and criticism are always welcome.

Random type fun.

What all I've been working on!

Here’s some process work from my seminar project (which is basically our senior thesis). Mine’s going to be a short book about the Army ROTC program, of which I am a participant. Part comic stories and part interviews. This is all in very early stages. I just thought It was about time my “sketch blog” actually had some sketches.

A comic page

Some simple ink portraits.

An example interview spread.

Pagination studies! Believe it or not, these make perfect sense to me.

That’s all for now.

It’s been a busy few weeks and I’ve been neglecting the blog but here’s another poster to tide you over.
Incidentally, I’ve got a random image blog I curate over at http://nobodyknowsanybody.tumblr.com that you should follow if the spirit moves you, and you don’t have a particularly weak stomach.

Sorry for the lack of updates. Currently working on the rest of my website. Vacation’s almost over though. I should have lots of new updates in the coming weeks.

A while back I did a series of posters for my favorite movies. Most of them were pretty bad (the posters, not the movies), but I thought reworking and expanding the set might be a fun winter project. More to come!

Designing type has kinda become one of my passions. This is a title vector for a theoretical comic. A story idea I’ve been kicking around for an ongoing serial. I’ve been talking about collabing with my friend Lily who’s a way better drafts(wo)man than I am. I’ll keep you, dear hypothetical reader, updated on that.

Shrine to Self
wood, nails, glue, paint

A project for 3D design. We had to make a “prosthetic” that serves a specific function. Mine blocks out the world. Of course mine would do that.

The device is pretty bulky, but the weight is supported well on the upper back and shoulders. Three panels nest inside the hood. Pull one down for a visor that only lets you see whats on the table in front of you. Pull all three down and it still lets light in but vision is completely blocked. Sound is also muffled somewhat.

P.S. If anyone knows how to put multiple images in one post without that ugly flash slideshow, I’d love to hear it.

P.P.S. new logo!

I’m starting a sequential image story which I’ll be incorporating into the blog. Since it’ll be mixed in with the rest of the posts, I’ll use tags and put a link in the sidebar at some point to make it easier to follow. It’s called ROOT. This is the title page.

Our assignment is to create a poster for a stageplay. This one’s for “A Streetcar Named Desire.” The idea is to have light from the street casting through the window into Blanche’s corner of the apartment, overpowering the dim light of her paper lantern. In other words, her pretense as a woman of grace and refinement cannot compete with the harsh reality of her position. The sexual red light versus the pure white light.
I don’t usually use Illustrator. It’s painstaking but rewarding.
I watched the film over and over again for inspiration. It is truly excellent. I am in awe of Brando’s performance every time.
